Sacred Nine Project: Demon in the Glass
preaching a message of teetotalism, one parlour at a time!
Thursday, 5 December 2024, Home of Marc Behar & Jeff Sbisa, 1422 Jackson Avenue, New Orleans, LA
Welcome to Sacred Nine Project: Demon in the Glass, a wacky look at the Temperance Movement taking place in America, Canada, and the British Isles in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It employed the device of moral suasion, using sympathy to appeal to a certain moral code. What you will hear is not to be believed. These kinds of songs ultimately led to American Prohibition.
Marc Behar and Jeff Sbisa graciously allowed us into their home for heavy hors d’oeuvres, drinks, and a parlour concert, featuring the wacky, melodramatic, and finger-wagging music of the 19th century American Temperance Movement. Our vocal quartet and pianist provided “lush” entertainment to drinkers, while peddling (with tongue-in-cheek, of course) a message of teetotalism.
